Cosmic Explosion Among the Brightest in = Recorded=20 History

Scientists have = detected a=20 flash of light from across the Galaxy so powerful that = it=20 bounced off the Moon and lit up the Earth's upper = atmosphere.=20 The flash was brighter than anything ever detected = from beyond=20 our Solar System and lasted over a tenth of a second. = NASA and=20 European satellites and many radio telescopes detected = the=20 flash and its aftermath on December 27, 2004. Two = science=20 teams report about this event at a special press event = today=20 at NASA headquarters. A multitude of papers are = planned for=20 publication.

The scientists said the light came = from a=20 "giant flare" on the surface of an exotic neutron = star, called=20 a magnetar. The apparent magnitude was brighter than a = full=20 moon and all historical star explosions. The light was = brightest in the gamma-ray energy range, far more = energetic=20 than visible light or X-rays and invisible to our=20 eyes.

Such a close and powerful eruption raises = the=20 question of whether an even larger influx of gamma = rays,=20 disturbing the atmosphere, was responsible for one of = the mass=20 extinctions known to have occurred on Earth hundreds = of=20 millions of years ago. Also, if giant flares can be = this=20 powerful, then some gamma-ray bursts (thought to be = very=20 distant black-hole-forming star explosions) could = actually be=20 from neutron star eruptions in nearby = galaxies.

NASA's newly launched Swift satellite = and the=20 NSF-funded Very Large Array (VLA) were two of many=20 observatories that observed the event, arising from = neutron=20 star SGR 1806-20, about 50,000 light years from Earth = in the=20 constellation Sagittarius.

"This might be a=20 once-in-a-lifetime event for astronomers, as well as = for the=20 neutron star," said Dr. David Palmer of Los Alamos = National=20 Laboratory, lead author on a paper describing the = Swift=20 observation. "We know of only two other giant flares = in the=20 past 35 years, and this December event was one hundred = times=20 more powerful."

Dr. Bryan Gaensler of = the=20 Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in = Cambridge,=20 Mass., is lead author on a report describing the VLA=20 observation, which tracked the ejected material as it = flew out=20 into interstellar space. Other key scientific teams = are=20 associated with radio telescopes in Australia, The=20 Netherlands, United Kingdom, India and the United = States, as=20 well as with NASA's High Energy Solar Spectroscopic = Imager=20 (RHESSI).

A neutron star is the core remains of = a star=20 once several times more massive than our Sun. When = such stars=20 deplete their nuclear fuel, they explode -- an event = called a=20 supernova. The remaining core is dense, fast-spinning, = highly=20 magnetic, and only about 15 miles in diameter. = Millions of=20 neutron stars fill our Milky Way galaxy.

Scientists = have=20 discovered about a dozen ultrahigh-magnetic neutron = stars,=20 called magnetars. The magnetic field around a magnetar = is=20 about 1,000 trillion gauss, strong enough to strip = information=20 from a credit card at a distance halfway to the moon.=20 (Ordinary neutron stars measure a mere trillion gauss; = the=20 Earth's magnetic field is about 0.5 = gauss.)

Four of=20 these magnetars are also called soft gamma repeaters, = or SGRs,=20 because they flare up randomly and release gamma rays. = Such=20 episodes release about 10^30 to 10^35 watts for about = a=20 second, or up to millions of times more energy than = our Sun.=20 For a tenth of a second, the giant flare on SGR = 1806-20=20 unleashed energy at a rate of about 10^40 watts. The = total=20 energy produced was more than the Sun emits in 150,000 = years.=20

"The=20 next biggest flare ever seen from any soft gamma = repeater was=20 peanuts compared to this incredible December 27 = event," said=20 Gaensler. "Had this happened within 10 light years of = us, it=20 would have severely damaged our atmosphere. = Fortunately, all=20 the magnetars we know of are much farther away than=20 this."

A scientific debate raged in the 1980s = over=20 whether gamma-ray bursts were star explosions from = beyond our=20 Galaxy or eruptions on nearby neutron stars. By the = late 1990s=20 it became clear that gamma-ray bursts did indeed = originate=20 very far away and that SGRs were a different = phenomenon. But=20 the extraordinary giant flare on SGR 1806-20 reopens = the=20 debate, according to Dr. Chryssa Kouveliotou of NASA = Marshall=20 Space Flight Center, who coordinated the = multiwavelength=20 observations.

A sizeable percentage of "short" = gamma-ray=20 bursts, less than two seconds, could be SGR flares, = she said.=20 These would come from galaxies within about a 100 = million=20 light years from Earth. (Long gamma-ray bursts appear = to be=20 black-hole-forming star explosions billions of light = years=20 away.)

"An answer to the 'short' gamma-ray = burst=20 mystery could come any day now that Swift is in = orbit", said=20 Swift lead scientist Neil Gehrels. "Swift saw this = event after=20 only about a month on the job."

Scientists around the world have been = following=20 the December 27 event. RHESSI detected gamma rays and = X-rays=20 from the flare. Drs. Kevin Hurley and Steven Boggs of = the=20 University of California, Berkeley, are leading the = effort to=20 analyze these data. Dr. Robert Duncan of the = University of=20 Texas at Austin and Dr. Christopher Thompson at the = Canadian=20 Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (University of = Toronto)=20 are the leading experts on magnetars, and they are=20 investigating the "short duration" gamma-ray burst=20 relationship.

Brian Cameron, a graduate student = at=20 Caltech under the tutorage of Prof. Shri Kulkarni, = leads a=20 second scientific paper based on VLA data. Amateur = astronomers=20 detected the disturbance in the Earth's ionosphere and = relayed=20 this information through the American Association of = Variable=20 Star Observers (http://www.aa= vso.org).
