ZURICH (Thomson Financial) - Swiss Re said it obtained = 100 mln=20 usd worth of protection against earthquake claims from = MedQuake Ltd,=20 sponsoring the first Mediterranean earthquake risk bond.=20

Under the terms of the agreement, MedQuake will issue = principal=20 at-risk variable rate notes covering severe earthquake risk = in=20 Turkey, Greece, Israel, Portugal and Cyprus for the period = May 2007=20 through May 2010, the Swiss reinsurer said.=20

The private placement, which closed yesterday, was = underwritten=20 by Swiss Re Capital Markets and purchased by a variety of=20 institutional investors.=20

This is the first time that earthquake risk in these = countries=20 has been securitised in the capital markets, Swiss Re said.=20
