SEISMIC ALERT: FOLKESTONE 14:35 UTC 3 MARCH 2009 = 2.8 ML=20 The British Geological Survey recorded an = earthquake with=20 a magnitude of 2.8 directly under Folkestone at 14:35 on 3 March = 2009. The=20 earthquake was felt by many residents of Folkestone and the = surrounding=20 area. Most people have reported the strength of the shaking as = weak to=20 moderate with instances of windows rattling. There are around three earthquakes of this size = in=20 mainland Britain every year. Today=92s earthquake was around 200 = times=20 smaller than the magnitude 4.3 earthquake that struck Folkestone = on 28=20 April 2007, causing some damage. =93This was a small earthquake, = even by=20 British standards and we would not expect it to cause any = damage=94 said Dr=20 Brian Baptie from the British Geological Survey Significant earthquakes also struck the Dover = Straits in=20 1776 and 1580; the latter had an approximate magnitude of 5.7 ML = and=20 reportedly caused damage in London. SEISMIC ALERT: SHETLAND ISLES 05:32 UTC 15 JANUARY = 2009 3.3=20 ML BGS have received a number of reports of an = earthquake=20 from residents in the Shetland Isles on 15 January. The earthquake = had a=20 magnitude of 3.3 with an epicentre on the Shetland Isles.=20 There is around three earthquakes of this size in the UK = every year.=20 Reports described "similar feeling to being moved forward then = stopping=20 with a jolt", "windows shook, like as if a truck was driving past = really=20 fast and close", "the noise got louder, then stopped, then the = windows=20 went in and out", "growing rumble, sounded very much like a fast=20 approaching, and very large train" and "like a loud explosion". = The=20 strength of the shaking has been described in most cases as = moderate,=20 enough to make furniture shake and windows or crockery rattle. = Some=20 reports indicate that people were woken from sleep and a few were=20 frightened. However, an earthquake of this size is unlikely to = cause any=20 structural damage. This is the largest earthquake to strike this = area since=20 a magnitude 3.5 earthquake on 12 October 2002, approximately 85 km = southeast of today=92s event. The Shetland Isles are low in = seismic activity=20 with any events occurring usually below 2 in magnitude.
